Corporate Controller
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Corporate Controller to join our rapidly growing Series A startup focused on thermochemical energy storage systems. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on financial leader with experience in and capable of building and scaling our accounting function from the ground up. The Corporate Controller will be expected to articulate OKRs for the function and demonstrate the ability to lead a team to achieve metrics-oriented results. Strong preference for San Diego headquartered based candidates with a willingness to consider extremely strong remote/hybrid candidates.
Responsibilities
- Oversee all accounting operations, including billing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger
- Redesign and implement a new chart of accounts to support our growing business needs
- Lead the migration from QuickBooks to a more robust GL system, ensuring a smooth transition and data integrity
- Develop and implement accounting processes, policies, and controls suitable for a fast-paced startup environment
- Build and manage a high-performing accounting team as the company scales
- Prepare and analyze financial statements, reports, and forecasts for management and investors
- Manage inventory accounting, including costing, valuation, and reconciliation
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and other relevant standards
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide financial insights and support decision-making
- Optimize financial operations to support the company’s growth and strategic objectives
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA certification strongly preferred
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a controller or senior accounting role
- Proven experience in inventory accounting, preferably in hardware, supply chain or logistics industries
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements
- Hands-on experience redesigning chart of accounts and implementing new accounting systems
- Demonstrated ability to build and scale accounting processes and teams from scratch
- Proficiency in QuickBooks and experience migrating to more advanced ERP/GL systems
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced startup environment
- Experience with financial modeling, budgeting, and forecasting
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a Series A or B startup
- Familiarity with supply chain and logistics financial operations
- Knowledge of equipment/product revenue recognition principles
- Experience with venture capital reporting and board presentations
