Power Electronics Engineer

Power Electronics Engineer

Job Description

The ideal candidate for the position is someone who has experience with power electronics development and can own product development through all stages of conception, prototype, and productization. Specifically, you will focus on specifying, designing, and optimizing the magnetic components (transformers and inductors), power modules selection, sizing DC link capacitors and design gate drivers and protection system. In this role, you will work closely with a talented engineering team in a fast-paced environment to apply emerging technologies in innovative ways to rapidly produce new products.

This position is full-time on-site, located in San Diego, CA reporting to the Senior Director of Engineering – Power Electronics. Up to 20% travel is expected for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Design and optimize the power conversion systems (e.g., inverters, converters, motor drives) that support thermochemical reactor subsystems, such as feedstock processing, high-temperature heating, or gas compression.
  • Power electronics design in support of new product development.
  • Design and implement DC/DC, AC/DC, and DC/AC conversion circuits focusing on cost reduction of the full product.
  • Work effectively with cross-functional teams to resolve early (architectural) and late (lab, test, validation & production) PCS issues on fast timelines.
  • Perform hardware bring-up and integration of power electronics circuits and modules and support power conversion systems hardware/software integration.
  • Develop and manage high-efficiency power control strategies to interface with renewable energy sources (e.g., solar PV, wind) and energy storage systems, ensuring stable operation of thermo-electrochemical processes.
  • Collaborate with thermal, mechanical, and software engineering teams to integrate power conversion system into a complex energy storage system.
  • Oversee the specification and design of custom magnetics, gate drivers, and protection circuitry to support high-voltage, high-temperature, and harsh-environment operation typical of thermochemical facilities.
  • Support R&D efforts in energy system scalability, evaluating power electronics designs for modular pilot plants, scale-up to commercial systems, and grid interconnection compatibility.
  • Ensure designs meet environmental, safety, and industry regulations (such as UL, CE, and IEC standards), and lead electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and reliability testing for robust field performance.

Requirements

  • Fully on-site
  • Education: Bachelor of Science (BS) in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university
  • Years of Experience: Minimum of 5 years of industry or university research experience in power electronics design, analysis, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Very strong analytical skills and detail-oriented
  • Ability to travel per company needs
  • High comfort level navigating ambiguity and changing scope

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education: Master of Science (MS) degree or higher in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university
  • Hands-on experience building from ground up
  • Experience in a scrappy start-up environment
  • Experience with 3rd party manufacturing and supply partners
  • Familiar with HIL system for control system tuning
  • Experience with embedded software
