Technician – Machinist

Technician - Machinist

Job Summary

We seek a skilled Machinist (with CNC capabilities) to produce engineered parts used to build testing apparatus, instruments, sensors, dies, machines, and power electronic components. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, be able to work independently and as part of a team and have 5+ years of experience.

Machinist duties and responsibilities

The biggest responsibility of a machinist at Redoxblox is to make parts that fully meet all required specifications. To achieve this primary goal, they typically perform the following machinist job duties:

  • Machining & Fabrication:
    • Analyzing specification charts, samples and drawings to gain a thorough understanding of requirements.
    • Developing a plan of action to manufacture parts according to specifications.
    • Measuring and marking raw materials needed to manufacture parts.
    • Setting up equipment needed to complete each step of the manufacturing plan.
    • Operating equipment to carry out each step correctly.
    • Monitoring the production process and intervening when problems arise.
    • Inspecting finished parts for flaws and defects.
    • Assemble parts as needed.
  • Component Modification & Repair: Modify and repair existing parts and assemblies as required by engineering designs and R&D needs, using techniques such as milling, drilling, and threading.
  • Material Selection & Handling: Work with high-temperature and specialty materials (e.g., refractory metals, ceramics, alloys) to ensure they meet the durability and performance standards required for thermochemical applications.
  • Technical Collaboration: Work closely with engineers to interpret technical drawings, troubleshoot machining challenges, and suggest modifications or improvements to designs.
  • Quality Assurance & Inspection: Inspect machined components for precision, finish, and dimensional accuracy. Perform quality control checks to ensure parts meet the required tolerances and specifications.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Maintaining equipment located throughout the machine shop ensuring all tools are in optimal working condition to meet the demands of R&D projects.
  • Safety & Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols, particularly when working with high-temperature materials and machining equipment and ensure compliance with industry and facility safety standards.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Document work performed and maintain accurate records
  • Record setup procedures, machining parameters, and modifications made to components, providing detailed feedback to engineering and R&D teams.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or certification in machining, tool making, or a related field is a plus.
  • Experience: 3+ years of experience as a machinist, with a background in R&D or high-temperature applications preferred.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in operating CNC machines, mills, lathes, and grinders.
    • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.
    • Familiarity with high-temperature and specialty materials, including ceramics, alloys, and refractory metals.
  • Precision & detail oriented: Exceptional attention to detail and ability to work with tight tolerances, ensuring accuracy and consistency in fabricated parts.
  • Problem solving skills: Strong troubleshooting skills, with the ability to identify and solve machining challenges in real time.
  • Communication skills: Clear communication with engineers and team members to ensure machining outputs align with R&D needs.

Working Conditions

  • Environment: Primarily workshop-based, with some exposure to lab or high-temperature environments for prototype testing and assembly.
  • Safety gear: Regular use of protective equipment, such as safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection, when operating machinery and handling high-temperature materials.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in high-temperature applications, thermal systems, or energy storage.
  • Knowledge of materials science, particularly regarding the machining of ceramics, metals, and other heat-resistant materials.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and best practices in machining and high-temperature R&D settings.

Note: The Machinist Technician will be integral to the development and refinement of high-temperature energy storage components, contributing directly to the advancement of sustainable energy solutions. This role offers an opportunity to work on complex R&D projects at the cutting edge of thermochemical energy storage technology.
